Practice Like a Champion To be One – Shyamatank GangulyJune 3, 2018
I am Shyamantak Ganguly, 2nd degree full Contact(Kyokushin) Karate black belt. I am practicing karate for the last 20 years under my father and teacher Shihan Shivaji Ganguly. I am 23 years old. I am certified fitness trainer under govt of India(NSDC).
In the year 2012, for the first time I represented India in the Asian Tournament in Kazakhstan, that time I was only 17 years old. As a basic rule, you have to be above 18 years to take part in the senior international tournaments but as a special case I was allowed to take part in the tournament because I became the junior Asian Champion in Sri Lanka. I was confident but the level of the tournament was very high. My first round was against a Sri Lankan guy who was 24 years old. He was an experienced fighter. He punched me continuously in the ribs and I lost the fight by some points. That night I cried a lot and I was not able to put my hands down and I was not able to sleep properly. The pain was almost there for two months.
After I lost the 2012 Asian Championship, my Coach used to beat me with the bamboo to condition my body. And I used to take hits from 20 persons one after the another. Then I realized that I need to practice more to fight in the senior level. I practiced hard like almost 6 hours a day. I wore the 20 kg weighted vest and ran 5 kms and went to the gym; trained there. In the evening I used to focus on my techniques. I practiced the fight techniques 1000 times a day and did 500 squats and 200 reps of push ups and 300 reps of crunches.
I used to wake up at 6 am and did an hour training. I had to study too so after studying for one hour, I again did some strength exercise and during the evening I used to teach full contact karate and train at the same time. From school and college I got the full support during my training days. I used to wear ankle weights of 2 kgs each and did 200-300 kicks .
My whole family supported me during my training. My elder brother Sensei Shibayan Ganguly was always with me, motivating me, and used to say that Shyamantak “YOU CAN”. I maintained my studies well and I used to play cricket for my school and college. And was training for my karate tournament as well.
From then, I became 5 times national champion. I won the national tournament where selected best fighters from all over India came to take part and I became the Champion of Champions.
Then the day came after waiting almost 5 years – 26 Oct ,2016. I represented India in the full contact karate(Kyokushin Karate) World Championship 2016. The first round was against America . I knocked him out by a round kick, my favourite kick. Then I won against Zimbabwe in points. And I became the first Indian to enter the top 16 of the World Championship and I fought a Japanese guy who won by one point. I gave a tough fight and later the fighter became the World Champion.
After that in 2017 I again became a national champion. And now preparing for my next world championship and other international tournaments.
